First Lessons

Hey welcome back! Remember to leave a comment!
Good, bad, or otherwise.

Maybe the title is misleading. This post is not so much about my first lessons in improv, but more about my first immediate lessons in watching it again for the first time in the last couple of months. Let me explain…

I went to see the Maestro Improv Battle at the Dallas Comedy House and got to see almost 20 improvisational actors on stage. It is an amazing experience and sometimes the people that I thought were best got eliminated simply because of the way the game is structured.

However, one of my favorite improv-ers, Jason Folks (from Ad-Libs Comedy), did win the competition. In doing so, he had to present his thesis on underwater basket weaving. In that moment I became aware of the fact that my depth of experience and random information was not as great as many of the actors on stage.

I have heard of basket weaving but have no idea what really is involved in it. Having said all that, I would have just made something up and just improvised if it had been me on stage. :)

That was not the only instance where I have felt that way when watching these guys on stage.

So the lesson I got out of it is: GET OUT! Do more, be more, live more! And so I improv.
